Ban glue traps

Ban Glue Traps
Introduction

This campaign appeals to Globe Australia Pty Ltd to stop selling rodent glue traps. It is our belief that glue traps are one of the cruelest pest control devices on the market today. These devices consist of a plastic, cardboard or fibreboard tray with a silicone adhesive coating which is designed to catch and hold rats and mice.

Why are glue traps cruel?
Animals caught on these traps often suffer for days before dying of exposure, predation, suffocation, starvation, dehydration or shock. Some animals resort to self mutilation and chewing off their limbs in a desperate attempt to escape. In addition, painful injuries including broken limbs are often sustained while the trapped animal attempts to free itself.

Glue traps are also hazardous to other non-target animals including lizards, juvenile possums, small snakes, native rodents, birds and even companion animals, which frequently fall victim to these devices.

What are the alternatives?
There are humane alternatives to controlling rodent problems including natural repellents, modifying areas to prevent access by rodents and smart mouse traps which if used correctly allows the person to safely relocate the animal with minimal fuss.

Humane smart traps are available from most hardware and garden stores. To order online at Humane Mousetrap, please click here.

Helpful tips for preventing rodents
Keep a clean yard - Remove rubbish, garden waste and debris from your yard - mice and rats love to make their homes in this stuff!
Eliminate food sources - Pick up fallen fruit from fruit trees.
Store pet food in secure metal containers to prevent rodent access.
Seal gaps to your house where rodents may gain entry. Use metal, concrete or steel wool.
Ensure outdoor cooking areas clean and free of food scraps.
Keep compost bins as far away from your dwelling as possible.

What you can do:
If you find an animal stuck, apply a small amount of vegetable oil or baby oil to the glued area and gently remove the animal.
If you see glue traps for sale, please take a moment of speak to the manager about the suffering these traps cause and encourage the manager to sell humane live traps as an alternative.
Encourage family and friends to avoid rodent glue traps and recommend humane live traps instead.
